Germany - the bread country

October 20, 2021

Dear Blog Readers,

I associate bread with honesty, home, originality, enjoyment ... I can think of many more positive words. And a lot of people in Germany feel the same way I do. Bread belongs to Germany. With this article I would like to introduce you briefly and concisely, what makes the bread country Germany and which bread is eaten the most.

Germany is the world champion in baking bread.

Germans have over 300 types of bread at their disposal - a huge selection. The vast majority of Germans (94%) eat bread every day, for many it is part of breakfast and / or dinner.

The first two places in the list of Germans' favorite breads are occupied by wheat or mixed wheat bread and toast.

The wheat bread consists of at least 90% wheat flour. Other ingredients are water, yeast, fat and sugar. Sometimes milk is also included. Toast bread is especially appreciated for its toasted aroma.

So-called special breads with different grains or seeds, e.g. sunflower bread or flaxseed bread, are becoming increasingly popular. Health and fitness are playing an increasingly important role in the diet of Germans.

Those who like it really healthy and rich in vitamins reach for wholemeal bread.

The wholemeal bread can be baked from rye or whole wheat flour. Unlike non-whole grain breads, it still contains all the components of the cereal grain and is therefore rich in vitamins, protein and fiber. According to GfK, Germans bought 1,681,939 tons of bread in 2020. This represents an increase of 4.4% compared to the previous year. One reason for this could be the Corona pandemic, which has brought the classic family dinner back to the fore. Overall, since the beginning of the pandemic, more meals have again been eaten at home in the family, which has caused bread consumption to rise.
